Narrative of the Young Shepherd
In the heart of the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was essentially to care for his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind among the single tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his charges instilled in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. However, one noon, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story more info as appropriate today as it was in the past.
